After the meal, Lekore slipped away from his Kel companions to bury the cheos bones while the twins saddled up the pythe. Hidden by the decaying walls of Halathe, Lekore closed his eyes to absorb the bliss of being alone.

So much of his life had been spent alone. He had come to relish it, except in the darkest stretches of night when bad dreams came. There are other times, too. Do not fool yourself.

He knelt and dug with his borrowed knife in the dirt. What should he do in company with these strangers? How should he behave?

I thought I was prepared to face them.

“How do you fare, Lekore?”

He gasped and snapped his head up. “Skye! Where have you been?”

The translucent man stood before him in ancient, sharply angled armor that flashed and winked beneath the sun, a red cape draped over one shoulder. Skye’s red eyes searched Lekore’s face, brow creased. He crouched to level himself with his student. “I must apologize. I did not expect your circumstances to take such a dark turn, and so swiftly. Star Worshipers are rarely as bold as that. I tried to warn you, but the borders of that unholy temple are impossible for me to cross. Even the spirits cannot enter its grounds, nor the dungeons of the Sun Cathedral.”

Lekore bowed his head as chills crawled over his flesh. “I suspected as much, after you called my name. I could hear the wind howling even within the black walls.” He rested his hand over the cut on his arm. “I met a dark Hakija. He drew my blood, Skye, and pressed a strange stone to the wound. Its heart flamed purple and made my very bones ache with cold. Even now, I feel a kind of hollowness in my soul.” He clutched at his chest. “He told me that they follow you. That you are their founder.”

The ghost scoffed. “I’m not their founder, but never let it be said a Kel cannot delude himself into any justification.” He sighed. “Do you seek the trapped Spirits Elemental?”

Lekore nodded. “Are you not worried by the black stone and the use of my blood?”

“I am worried. But you must focus on stopping these storms and let me investigate the Hakija of the Night. I will learn what I can, though I fear I already know what his actions will bring about.”

“Will you not tell me?”

“I will only if need be. If I can spare you one burden, please let me.”

Lekore studied Skye’s eyes. Fear filled them like the floods of the Rainy Season pouring into the Vale That Shines Gold.

The ghost offered a faint smile. “Ter and I have done all we know to prepare you for what you now face, Lekore. Be brave. Muster all your strength. Do not flee from your calling.”

Lekore dipped his head. “What if I am not equal to what you have foreseen?”

Skye laughed. “Impossible. You have the strength of an emockye pack and the cunning of a cheos mother. You will manage.
